Planting and Supporting Local Churches
Holistic community transformation will always involve the work of the gospel in individual hearts; therefore gospel-centered evangelism, discipleship, and church planting are woven through all that we do. In a religious and cultural context often dominated by nominalism and moralism, we seek to be a redemptive and counter-cultural community of gospel grace in the heart of the city. As we strengthen and plant local churches among the urban poor, we long to be joyful people of worship, word, sacrament, and kingdom justice, all which overflow from the free and abundant grace we have received through the person and work of Jesus Christ.
Community Bible Studies
Since gathering in fellowship around the Word of God is central to true community transformation, we hold weekly Bible studies in each neighborhood in which we work. These bible studies help gather and disciple a core group of believers while also providing a welcoming environment for spiritual seekers to explore the hope of the gospel. As community members are challenged and encouraged by the Scriptures they become the foundation for ongoing evangelism and discipleship.
In communities where there is a lack of churches serving the whole population through holistic gospel ministry, we work to coalesce our bible studies into a church plant for the surrounding neighborhood. We develop Ethiopian-led teams to minister and teach, lead worship and prayer, offer spiritual counseling and pastoral care, and develop effective children’s ministry. Our church plants strive to be Christ-centered communities open for the entire neighborhood—regardless of a person’s health status or ethnic, linguistic, religious, or socio-economic background.
Addis Ababa Church Renewal Network
Every two months we gather local pastors and elders from our region of the city to worship, pray, share, and learn together for the sake of personal and church renewal. Our vision is to see Addis Ababa transformed through local churches that have a biblical, passionate belief and practice of the gospel of Jesus Christ—a gospel lived out with our heads, our hearts, and our hands, in all the neighborhoods of the city. We seek to accomplish this by supporting local pastors, elders, and churches in church planting, church renewal, and holistic gospel ministry in the city through collaborative training, leadership development, resourcing, supportive gospel community, prayer, and partnership.
Youth Sports Ministry
For a community gospel movement to make deep and lasting change, it must engage youth. We are working to develop soccer clubs for boys and girls aged 9-18 in two of the communities where Ethiopia ACT serves. These youth are coached weekly in their soccer skills, play games against other teams in neighboring communities, and attend weekly bible studies designed for them. In a context of high drug and alcohol use, commercial sex work, and high school dropout rates, these sports clubs reach out to youth in ways that develop their leadership abilities, shape their character, involve their families, and engage them with the gospel of Jesus Christ.
